Montrose Dog Beach
Located at Montrose Harbor in Uptown, Montrose Dog Beach is Chicago’s crown jewel for water-loving dogs. This fully fenced beach offers separate areas for large and small dogs, giving your Golden plenty of safe space to run and play.
The beach features fresh Lake Michigan water (though the temperature varies dramatically by season), sandy shores perfect for digging and romping, and stunning city skyline views. The fenced perimeter means you can relax knowing your Golden can’t wander off, though you should still keep an eye on them.
Montrose is popular, especially on weekends and during summer months. Visit during weekday mornings for a quieter experience, or embrace the social atmosphere when it’s busy—your Golden will likely make plenty of new friends.

Belmont Harbor Dog Beach
Just south of Montrose, Belmont Harbor Dog Beach offers a more intimate beach experience. It’s smaller and often less crowded than Montrose, making it ideal for dogs who might feel overwhelmed by too much activity or for owners who prefer a more relaxed vibe.
The beach still allows off-leash play within the designated area, and the calmer atmosphere can be perfect for puppies experiencing beach life for the first time or for older Goldens who enjoy a gentler pace.
Beach Safety and Requirements
All Chicago dog beaches require a valid Dog Friendly Area (DFA) permit and tag, available for $5 annually from participating veterinarians. Beyond permits, follow these guidelines for safe beach visits:
Always supervise your Golden near water, even if they’re strong swimmers. Rinse your dog with fresh water after swimming to remove lake water and sand. Watch for signs of fatigue—swimming is excellent exercise but can be tiring. Avoid beaches during extreme weather conditions or when water quality alerts are posted. Bring fresh drinking water; lake water isn’t safe for drinking.

The Loop location makes it convenient for downtown residents and provides an oasis of green space in the urban environment. Your Golden can run freely while you enjoy views of Chicago’s architectural wonders rising above the park.
Puptown Dog Park Beach (Margate Park – Uptown)
Puptown offers a unique combination: both an enclosed dog park with separate areas for different dog sizes and a small fenced beach area. This dual-purpose setup means your Golden can alternate between land-based play and water fun all in one visit.
The park features shade, seating for owners, and a strong sense of community among regular visitors. It’s particularly popular with dogs who love variety in their playtime.
